In 1975, a group of teenage siblings from Aberdeen, Mississippi, recorded an album of gospel songs. They called themselves the Staples Jr. Singers. The group pressed 500 copies and sold them at performances and in their backyard. Although the album fell into oblivion over the years, the group continued to perform gospel songs on weekends. In May 2022, the Luaka Bop label (run by David Byrne of the Talking Heads) reissued the group's only commercial album. The four-generation band soon attracted attention thanks to its frank and powerful performances. The energy of the band is intact and will have you tapping your feet to the rhythm of the drummer and revelling in the original blues-inspired guitar riffs, powerful bass lines and majestic vocals.
