On the shoulders of the singer Siti Muharam lies the legacy of her great-grandmother, Taarab music legend Binti Saad, the first woman in East Africa to record her music. On the album Siti of Unguja (which won her the prestigious Songlines Award for African Artist of the Year in 2021), her great-granddaughter keeps that trail-blazing spirit alive, mixing traditional sensibilities with exciting contemporary influences. On stage, her band creates a rare state of communion with the audience.
